What Do IRS Notices Mean?

Being sent an IRS notice in the mail is no cause for panic. Some IRS notices are easily resolved and your IRS problems will go away in no time.

The IRS sends out millions of notices every year. These are anything from default notices to errors on tax returns. Details on how to fix the matter are included in every issue-specific notice.

The top of the first page and the left side of the tear-off stub of the notice shows the specific collection process or CP number assigned to it.

The most common CP (collection process) numbers include:

  • CP12 - Math error (overpayment of $1 or more)
  • CP14 - Balance due
  • CP49 - Overpaid tax (applied to other taxes you need to pay)
  • CP90 - Final notice ? Notice of intent to levy
  • CP91 - Final notice before levy on Social Security benefits
  • CP161 - No math error, balance due
  • CP297 - Final notice ? Notice of your right to a hearing (CP90 & CP297 are simultaneously sent)
  • CP298 - Final notice of intent to levy on Social Security benefits (CP91 & CP298 are simultaneously sent)
  • CP501 - Balance due reminder notice
  • CP504 - Urgent notice ? balance due
  • CP523 - Installment agreement notice of default
  • CP2000: Notice of proposed adjustment for underpayment or overpayment

If you agree with the notice and need to pay a balance, quickly send your payment to ensure that your debt doesn't accrue interest and penalties. If there no tax owed, there's no need to respond.

In cases of disputes, you may contact the IRS through the information listed on the notice. It takes up to 30 days for the IRS to respond, so call or write to them immediately. Include additional documents and the tear-off portion of the notice in your letter.

Don't be alarmed if the IRS responds with another notice requiring more information and just follow the additional instructions.

Keep copies of all correspondences with the IRS for record-keeping purposes.
